Places to See

Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) is at the Pariser Platz and is with its six pillars the most famous landmark in Berlin.

Tiergarten
Tiergarten is a big park in the centre of Berlin, right next to Brandenburg Gate. The park offers a few quiet moments while exploring the city, but also places for sport, boating or eating cake.

Victory Column
If you climb 285 stairs you get a really nice view of Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin Tiergarten. The view from the Victory Column (Siegessäule) is a must see in Berlin.

Things to Do

Walk Along the East Side Gallery
The East Side Gallery is a colorful section of the Berlin Wall, which once divided the city into East and West Berlin. It is the largest open-air gallery in the world.

Reach the Top of Fernsehturm (TV Tower)
The TV Tower at Alexanderplatz is Berlin’s most prominent landmark and the tallest building in Germany. Its steel sphere contains a visitor platform and a revolving restaurant. Visit at night for the best view over the city!

Spend a Day on Museum Island
That’s right, there’s actually a museum island in Berlin home to five world-class museums and the Berlin Cathedral.

Go Shopping
Check out Kurfürstendamm (also known as Ku’damm), Friedrichstrasse, and all the indie boutiques in Kreuzberg, F’hain & P’berg.

Rent an Insanely Cheap Bike
Central Berlin is well supplied with bike-rental outlets and the city has a welcoming cycle culture.

Discover the Nightlife
Berlin is notorious for its nightlife. You can start partying on Saturday and walk out of the club on Tuesday. There are no rules. You could take your chances at Berghain, one of the world’s best nightclubs, but it is incredibly hard to get into. Another option is Watergate – a raver’s dream. Otherwise Kreuzberg turns into one huge open air club during the night. It’s where you can find the coolest bars and clubs.

Places to Eat

If you were expecting a bunch of restaurants with tons of traditional German foods, you were wrong. With Berlin being such an international city, there are all kinds of foods to try. Here are a couple great ones you should catch!

Berlin Burger International
Try the PERFECT burger here at Berlin Burger. Every month they have a different flavor for you to choose but the regular options are also unimaginably awesome. Don’t forget to try the chili cheese fries or the chili cheese sweet potato fries, ok? They will NOT disappoint!

Imren
Imren is by far the BEST döner you will ever have! For those who have no idea what a döner is, a döner kebab is a Turkish inspired dish made of meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie and it was invented in Berlin. Normally lamb is the meat of choice but sometimes you can find beef. In Berlin it’s pretty common to find the chicken version also. They also have the best lentil soup!

Solar Sky Lounge & Restaurant
Located near the AWE venue, this spot is great for meetings and great food! Enjoy German classics and fresh creations by Chef Jon Kremin and his team at Solar Berlin. Wine and dine overlooking the beautiful city of Berlin.

Quench Your Thirst

It isn’t a proper visit to Germany without spending time in a Biergarten. Check out this list of the Top 10 Biergarten’s near Berlin!

Bierfabrik
Bierfabrik is a small company in Marzahn that produces some of the best bier (BEER!) on the craft beer scene in Berlin.

Konrad Tönz
Konrad Tönz is a time travel experience with a big plus: this 60s vibe bar has the best bartenders in the city. The menu is divided by your alcohol of choice and what they offer goes from the basic gin & tonic all the way to an incredible Blood & Sand cocktail (Just ask for one!)

Tarantino’s Bar
For fans of Quentin Tarantino, this is a must-see bar, dedicated to the legendary director and his illustrious back catalogue. Expect to enjoy your beverage while Reservoir Dogs or Kill Bill screens in the background, and listen to a playlist of music from his soundtracks.

Things to Know When Traveling in Berlin

Language
No worries if you are a little rusty on your German, most people speak English in the city, but go ahead and give the local language a try! Things will mostly be in German but important signage and directions will also include English. Click here for a list of common German phrases!

Currency
The currency in Berlin is the Euro. Lucky for those traveling from the U.S. right now, the Euro and the U.S. Dollar are pretty comparable. It will cost you $1.11 to get €1.00.

Payment and Tipping
While many places do accept credit and debit cards, plan to carry a small amount of cash with you. Smaller stores and bars are notorious for being cash only.

Tipping in Berlin is not obligatory. Serving staff in Germany earn a living wage and don’t depend on tips. Nevertheless it is very common to leave a tip if you enjoyed your meal and service. 5-10% of the bill is a common amount for a gratuity.

Transportation
Sad new first, there is NO Uber in Berlin 🙁 While this may be devastating to some, there are still plenty of ways to get around town.

Taxi
Taxi’s are a normal form of transportation in the city of Berlin and charge reasonable amounts to get around town. Most should accept credit cards, but it would be safe to have cash also. For larger groups be sure to request a “Maxi Taxi” which holds up to 8 people.

Public Transportation
The U-Bahn AKA the subway and the S-Bahn aka the above ground train, create the interlinked train system in Berlin. They’re the fastest way to get around town.

Weather
Temperatures in June average around 63°F (17°C). By mid-June, summer should be warming things up, but not for certain. We suggest planning for cooler weather and sunshine most of the time, with some options for rain and cooler temperatures, think layers!

Passport
You are not required to carry your passport, so don’t. It IS smart however to carry a copy of your passport with you at all times. This is the best and safest way to keep identification on you. You DO NOT want to risk losing your passport and not being able to get home!
